Lengthy sentence in sex-trafficking caseJan. 25, 2019 -- Andre Barnes, 42, who sex trafficked teens and fed the heroin habit of some of his addicted prostitutes, was sentenced to 27 years in prison by U.S. District Judge David Larimer. A jury in November convicted Barnes of nine sex-trafficking counts, including three charges that he trafficked minors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Melissa Marangola had sought for a sentence of life in prison.
More arrests in aftermath of fights at DiplomatJan. 22, 2019 -- Two more people have been arrested in connection with the Jan. 13 fight and gun fire at the Diplomat Banquet Center in Gates, bring the total number of people apprehended to four.Jose Munz and Solangie Rodriguez were both charged with reckless endangerment, with Munz also being charged with assault. Police say both threw liquor bottles into the crowd, with Munz striking a woman in the head. Earlier, two others surrendered after police used video to identify potentially dangerous behavior. Yamil Maldonado, 39, fired several rounds inside and outside the venue, and Isaac Dominguez-Gomez, 26, took part in a large fight, police said.
Investigation at high school thwarts potentional terror attackJan. 22, 2019 -- The investigation into a possible threat of violence at Greece Odyssey High School resulted instead in four arrests in connection with an alleged plot to attack Islamberg, a Muslim community in Delaware County.Brian F. Colaneri, 20, of Gates; Andrew C. Crysel, 18, of East Rochester; and Vincent R. Vetromile, 19, of Greece were charged with three counts of first-degree criminal possession of a dangerous weapon and one count of fourth-degree conspiracy. All are felonies. An unidentified 16-year-old suspect faces the same charges. The three adults were sent to the Monroe County Jail on $50,000 bail or $100,000 bond. The 16-year-old was held on $1 million bail. A 16-year-old Odyssey student triggered the investigation by showing a smart phone picture of another person to friends and making an off-hand comment that the subject looked like a candidate to be a school shooter, Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan said. Other students then reported the remarks to school officials. Police were contacted and made raids on the suspects' homes turned up three homemade bombs and multiple legally obtained firearms. The bombs were being examined by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Police tracking reports of explicit teen photosJan. 15, 2019 -- Police are investigating a rash of explicit photos shared on social media among students in the several area school districts including Canandaigua, Gates Chili, Greece and Hilton.The situation is Greece was being investigated as an instance of sharing explicit photos among students, according to a district statement. One scam being investigated involves a perpetrator who creates a social media account, friends students and then blackmails them for private information or photos. The Hilton district posted a letter to parents warning that several students in Monroe and Yates counties have been targeted. New York State Police launched its initial investigation into an online "sextortion" scam targeting Penn Yan and Dundee students last month. Wayne Central School District released a statement a week later saying that the district received reports of several students who had been victimized.
Police arrest six after large fight outside Franklin HighJan. 14, 2019 -- Rochester Police arrested six people after a large fight broke out outside Franklin High School at the end of the school day.Treivon Pugh, 21, Daekwon Collins, 19, and Jalen Thompson, 18, were charged with criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct. Jaheem Diggs, 17, was charged with harassment, disorderly conduct, obstructing governmental administration, and criminal mischief. A 16-year-old was also arrested for disorderly conduct and a 15-year-old was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstructing governmental administration. One person was knocked unconscious during the fracas and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
Victor man ticketed in accident that killed horseJan. 11, 2019 -- A Victor man, who believed he hit a deer, was ticketed after striking and killing a retired racehorse one week earlier, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office announced. Jeremy Dosiek, 42, was ticketed for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving an animal.The accident in Mendon killed Fairly Exceptional, a descendent of 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed. Fairly Exceptional, known to his owners as Ed, was believed to have been struck by a 2010 to 2013 silver or gray Toyota Corolla, police said at the time, adding the vehicle would have significant front-end damage. Dosiek was identified as the driver after social media posts identified his vehicle. Deputies didn't release what type of car Dosiek was driving at the time of the incident. The horse escaped when Lisa and Pal Calvacca had opened a gate on their property on Mendon Center Road to feed another one of their horses. Ed, who was 21 years old, sprinted through the open gate. Paul Calvacca said he heard a loud noise moments later. The family came across the horse, still alive but badly hurt, shortly afterward. Paul Calvacca's cousin had purchased Ed more than 10 years ago without knowing his pedigree as the family took up horseback riding.
Scuffle with security guard results in fatal shootingJan. 8, 2019 -- Rochester's third fatal shooting of the year resulted from a nightime scuffle with an on-duty security guard at the Cedarwood Towers apartments, 2052 E. Main St., city police said.The dead man was identified as Bradley Thomas, 26, a tenant of the building. He was pronounced dead at Strong Memorial Hospital. According to police, Thomas was threatening other residents in the lobby of the building when the security guard intervened and the altercation spilled into the parking lot. Police said the unidentified guard fired a single round from his legally registered firearm, striking Thomas in the upper body. Police have filed no charges against the security guard and the case will be forwarded to the Monroe County District Attorney's Office for evaluation.
No suspects in custody after fatal shootingJan. 4, 2019 -- Rochester police had no suspects in custody in the immediate aftermath of a fatal late-night shooting on South Plymouth Avenue between Ford Street and Columbia Avenue.Police said Chaunte Turner, 29, of Rochester was shot about 10:45 p.m. and died at the scene.
Expressway crash kills passenger; driver chargedJan. 3, 2019 -- Monroe County Sheriff's deputies charged Jordin Campbell, 22, of Rochester, with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, first-degree vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated following a late-night crash that killed a passenger in his vehicle and injured the driver and two others.The Sheriff's office identified the man killed as Anthony S. Mykins, 22, who was ejected from the 2001 Lexus and died at the scene. Deputies said Campbell, who also suffered serious injuries, was heading southbound on Clay Road with three passengers, when his car failed to negotiate a curve, left the road and crashed through a barrier along I-390. Campbell was arrested in Geneseo on Sept. 22 and charged with driving while ability impaired and several drug-related crimes. A court date in that case is scheduled for Jan. 15.
Shooting is city's first homicide of 2019Jan. 1, 2019 -- A man died and a woman was injured in Rochester's first homicide of the new year, an early-morning shooting incident in northeast Rochester. Police atrrived at 10 Stout St. just after 5 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting. Arthur Stevens, 30, was shot at least once in the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene.The wounds to Lisa Johnson, 29, were not considered life-threatening.
