Another guilty plea in fraud against XeroxApril 19, 2019 -- A Florida man pleaded guilty to a scheme that defrauded Xerox Corp. out of more than $20 million of printer toner.Robert Fisher of Daytona, Fla., admitted in federal court to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. As part of his plea before U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Wolford, Fisher will pay the IRS $192,495.42, plus interest and penalties, for filing false tax returns. He will also forfeit assets that were already seized.. Brothers Kyle Haynes, Jason Haynes and David Haynes, along with Bryan Day, all of Daytona, previously pleaded guilty to similar charges. Carlos Garza of Michigan was convicted of conspiracy to transfer stolen property last year and ordered to pay $1.37 million in restitution. He received five years of probation. Co-defendant David Meidel was also convicted.
Pizza chain founders hit with 78 felony countsApril 18, 2019 -- The couple who founded te Rochester region's Cam's Pizzeria chain has failed to report nearly $5 million in sales, the Monroe County District Attorney's Office alleges.Carmelo and Rosanna Calascibetta were indicted by a Monroe County grand jury on 78 felony counts each to conclude an investigation that began in 2016, according to Assistant District Attorney Michael Bezer, who said the couple owed nearly $400,000 in state income tax as a result of under-reporting sales between 2011 and 2015 at seven Monroe County locations. Fifty-eight of the 78 counts are for first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, stemming from quarterly sales tax reports to the state. The remaining charges are five counts of first-degree grand larceny, 13 counts of third-degree criminal tax fraud and two counts of third-degree grand larceny. Cam's Pizzeria lists 17 locations throughout Western and Central New York. The Calascibettas opened their first location in Geneva in 1980. The couple was originally charged in August 2018, Bezer said.
Police make arrest in first slaying of 2019April 15, 2019 -- A 24-year-old Rochester man has been charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault in connection with the city's first slaying of 2019.Shane T. Jones was charged in connection with the double shooting at 10 Stout St. on Jan. 1, a Rochester Police Department spokesperson said. Arthur J. Stevens, 30, of Rochester was pronounced dead at the scene and Lisa Johnson, 29, of Rochester survived upper-body wounds.
Arrest made in elderly Irondequoit woman's deathApril 12, 2019 -- Police Frederick Bohn, 38, in connection with the mid-March death of his 86-year-old aunt in her Irondequoit home.Bohn, of Irondequoit, was charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ingeborg Morley, who was found dead at 651 Lakeshore Blvd. on March 22 by officers called to check on her welfare. She was pronounced dead at the scene and police termed the death "suspicious." According to court documents, Morley died after suffering multiple blunt-force injuries and asphyxia. Bohn pleaded not guilty in Irondequoit Town Court and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail without bail. He was initially arrested last month on fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a misdemeanor, Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said. While in custody at the Monroe County Jail, Bohn allegedly stole a credit card from a nurse, and was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony.
Carjacking leads to pursuit, multiple accidents and arrestsApril 10, 2019 -- A 72-year-old Rochester woman says she was targeted by two teens before one assaulted her, taking her keys and stealing her car to set off a dangerous chase through the city and Gates.Lorriane Palma's car was totaled in the chase in which speeds reached 80 mph and a Rochester Police Department car was heavily damaged. Police said the two 15-year-olds appehended and charged are boyfriend and girlfriend. He was said to be a student at Edison Tech and doesn't have a record, but she ran away last month from her youth facility in Albany, where she was placed after a series of incidents in Rochester. The Family Court judge noted Thursday the seriousness of the series of events. Police say both teens stalked and later confronted the victim in the hallway of her apartment building. Deputy Monroe County District Attorney Paul Irving said Palma had said the suspects hanging around her apartment building before.
Laurie Kellogg released from state prisonApril 9, 2019 -- Laurie Kellogg, convicted in the 1991 murder of her husband at the couple's Cayuga Lake cottage, has been released from state prison after serving more than 26 years.The case inspired a 1994 made-for-TV movie on ABC, "Lies of the Heart: The Laurie Kellogg Story." Kellogg, 54, was sent to prison for the shooting death of Malcolm "Bruce" Kellogg, 43. Kellogg and four teens were charged in the slaying. One of the teens, with Denver McDowell pleading guilty to shooting Bruce Kellogg. McDowell testified that Laurie Kellogg seduced him into killing her husband, who she claimed had abused her. McDowell, now 45, remains in state prison serving a sentence of 25 years to life.
Suspect blurts out confession at arraignmentApril 8, 2019 -- The Greece man accused of the of killing 23-year-old Cherylann Jackson inside an apartment on North Clinton Avenue two days earlier, startled observers by teling the jude, "I did it" at his arraigment in Rochester City Court.Ronald Pilgrim, Jr., 27, was charged with second-degree murder and a plea of not guilty was entered on his behalf. While being led out of the courtroom after the appearance concluded, Pilgrim turned to the judge and blutred the confession as Jackson's family erupted in anger. Pilgrim, who was remanded without bail is scheduled to return to court for a hearing on May 13. The judge ordered that he undergo a mental health evaluation.
Violent weekend rattles Rochester residentsApril 8, 2019 -- With a new police chief to be named this week by Mayor Lovely Warren, the Rochester Police Department handled seven shootings over the weekend, including five late Sunday night into early Monday morning."Instead of ending their disputes through conflict resolution they chose to pull out weapons and engage in violent behavior which is unacceptable and quite frankly, it will not be tolerated," interim Police Chief Mark Simmons said. None of the incidents are believed to be related Simmons said police are pusuing leads on all of the shootings. Meanwhile, Rochester City Mayor Lovely Warren is expected to name the new police chief Tuesday. Authorities: Rochester man trafficked minors for sex, stabbed oneApril 8, 2019 -- A 24-year-old Rochester man trafficked three minors and an adult for sex and allegedly stabbed one with a screwdriver, authorities said in announcing the arrest of Quondall D. Davis.According to the office of United States Attorney James P. Kennedy, Jr., Davis was charged with sex trafficking of a minor and sex trafficking of an adult by force. The complaint said Davis, who goes by the name "Hot Dog" was identified during an investigation into prostitution in Rochester. Investigators determined some clients paid the women with heroin, which they turned over to Davis. Authorities said Davis allegedly stabbed one of the prostitutes in her side with a screwdriver. Davis was being held pending an April 11 bail hearing in federal court.
Retrial averted as defendant in Buffalo death pleads to manslaughterApril 8, 2019 -- Andre Lewis pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court in Erie County to first-degree manslaughter, admitting to fatally shooting his former stepfather in Erie County in 2017. Under his plea agreement, the Rochester resident will receive a sentence of five years when he is sentenced June 6.Two earlier trials for Lewis on murder charges ended with deadlocked juries. Lewis fatally shot Robert Todd Echols, 54, after an AAU basketball game in West Seneca, Erie County.>p> Lewis' attorneys claimed the defendent had acted in self-defense. Prosecutors countered that video evidence proved otherwise.
